An esteemed novelist and cultural critic, Edmund White is the author of many books including the autobiographical A Boy's Own Story, the memoir City Boy and now Jack Holmes and His Friend. He is also the author of a trilogy of autobiographical novels: A Boy's Own Story, The Beautiful Room is Empty, and The Farewell Symphony. It's crazy recapping a trip days later, but here goes. For me personally, it was reading A Boy's Own Story when I was about 14 or so (I think I came across it in the Eli M. Nothing much seemed to have changed when Monkbarns limped back into Newcastle NSW in November 1920 with a new captain and a broken mast. It's a novel about a gay adolescent who recalls his first sexual experience, his close relationship with his mother, and his longing for his father's affection.
